Elenore Anna Schewe PhD
Of Vandalia, Missouri died peacefully on June 14, 2020. Born on February 1, 1921 in her home of 85 years, she was the daughter of William H. and Ella May (Langhouser) Schewe. Student of Vandalia Public Schools, graduation High School at the age of 16 as part of the Class of 1937. Attended the University of Missouri and received an Architecture degree from Washington University in 1941, with honors. Post Graduate work at University of Southern California, University of Pennsylvania and received her Master's and PhD in Biology from Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She started her career as an engineering draftsman for Mexico Refractories in Mexico, MO and in a similar capacity at Combustion Engineering in New York City. Followed by moving to Pittsburgh to conduct medical surgery research for tissue transplantation until she was called back to Vandalia to care for her mother in 1960. While in Vandalia she pursued her career as a book illustrator. She was a strong community leader, as a member of PEO, AAUW, American Red Cross, Republican Party and was Mayor of Vandalia from 1986 to 1988. She received her pilot's license later in life. Her strong interest in travel allowed her to enjoy numerous trips including a trip around the world with Dr. Mary Alice Parrish. Elenore was highly generous to the community and those less fortunate, yet most without public awareness. A memorial service was held at dawn on June 20, 2020 at the Vandalia Cemetery.
