Walter Thomas (Pluck) Dixon, age 88, of Vandalia, MO passed away at 4:15 am Thursday, October 1, 2020, at Tri-County Care Center in Vandalia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Waters Funeral Home in Vandalia. Rev. Melvin McCaleb will officiate. Burial will be in the Vandalia Cemetery following the service.
A visitation celebrating the life of Walter "Pluck" Dixon will be held at 9:00 am until the time of service Saturday October 10, 2020 at the Waters Funeral Home.
Walter was born on January 3, 1932, in Vandalia, Missouri the son of Thomas and Nonie (Wilson) Dixon.
He was united in marriage to Izetta (Redmond) Dixon on September 26, 1958 in Vandalia, MO. She preceded him in death on January 5, 2020.
Survivors include daughter, Norma (Michael) Redmond of Evanston, IL; granddaughter, Michelle (Lee) Fox of Normal, IL; grandson, Derrick Barber, Jr. of Evanston, IL; two sisters, Dorothy (Herman) Miles of Columbia, MO, Cora Braggs of Kansas City, MO; two great-granddaughters, Danielle Fox and Mariah Barber of Chicago, IL; a special cousin, Kim Davis and close friend of the family Barbara Wray Clark who cared for Nonnie and Pluck when their daughter was away; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and five brothers, Maurice (Jim) Dixon, Robert Dixon, Donald Dixon, Dempsey Eugene Dixon, Sr., and Harold Dixon.
Walter attended school at Garfield School in Mexico, MO and then went to honorably serve his country in the United States Army. Walter worked as a laborer for Harbison Walker Refractories.
Walter had a huge passion for baseball and coached Khoury league for the children. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting especially rabbit and raccoon.
Walter was a member of Second Christian Church and the Men's Choirs for Second Christian and Second Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be William Wheeler, Jamie Wheeler, Wendell Wheeler, Kevin Cockrell, Roger Chatman and Ronnie Greene.
Honorary pallbearers are Bill Cockrell, Lee Fox, Michael Redmond, Larry Wheeler, Kenneth Wheeler and Derrick Barber Jr.
Memorial contributions may be made to Tri-County Care Center, 601 N Galloway Rd, Vandalia, MO 63382.
