Virgie E. Overton

Virgie Ethel Overton, age 105, of Vandalia, MO passed away at 12:13 pm Sunday, October 4, 2020, at the Tri-County Care Center in Vandalia.  

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, October 16, 2020 at the Waters Funeral Home. Rev. Melvin McCaleb will officiate. Burial will be in the Vandalia Cemetery following the service.

A visitation celebrating the life of Virgie Ethel Overton will be held at 12:00 pm until the time of service Friday October 16, 2020 at the Waters Funeral Home.

Due to COVID-19 the family of Virgie Ethel Overton is asking that anyone in attendance please follow social distancing guidelines and wear a mask or other personal protective items during the services.

Virgie was born on August 29, 1915, in Silex, Missouri the daughter of John and Gertrude (Turley) Salmon.

She was united in marriage to Sherman Overton Sr. and he preceded her in death in 1978.

Survivors include three brothers, Dolly (Leo) Salmon of Vandalia, Matthew Salmon and wife Cathrine of Vandalia, Jesse (Ed) Salmon of Oklahoma City, OK; two sisters, Lillian Johnson of Vandalia, Inez McPike of Vandalia; daughter-in-law, Kathy Overton of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Kolin Overton and wife, Greta and Katria Foreman and husband, Byran, and a host of other grandchildren, great grand children, great great grandchildren and loved family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Joshua Overton, daughter, Lillian (Floretta) Overton, brothers, Clement Salmon, Robert Salmon and Benjamin Salmon, sisters, Mayme (OC) Salmon and Bezolia Salmon.

Virgie graduated from Lincoln School in Vandalia as the valedictorian of her class and was a member of the Second Christian Church where she was the mother of the church and worked in Missions, she was also a member of the Concerned Citizens for Lincoln School.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, canning and working in the church during her younger days.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Greene, Kolin Overton, Mike Reynolds, Wendell Wheeler, Sam Chatman and Jamie Wheeler.  

Honorary pallbearers are Art Wiser, William Wheeler, Charles Overton, Kenard McPike, Estral McPike and Fernado Johnson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Second Christian Church 1071 West Booker P.O. Box 157, Vandalia, MO, 63382.
