Friday, December 19, 2008 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Waters Funeral Chapel, 500 S. Main Street in Vandalia, Missouri 63382.
Service:

Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Vandalia, Missouri.
Officiating will be: Rev. Bob Hoehn.
Music provided by: Shirley Forgy - pianist; Glen and Carolyn Bailey - duet.
Interment will be in the Vandalia Cemetery with full military honors.
Pallbearers: Chad McKain, Adam McKain, Jeff Wood, Andy Wood, Michael Wood and Ralph Nelson. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of the First Baptist Church, Vandalia.

Samuel Jones McCollum passed away at 8:50 a.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at the Tri-County Care Center in Vandalia, Missouri. Sam was a 1940 Vandalia High School graduate and farmed with his parents before joining the U. S. Army during World War II. He served in the European Theater and returned to the farm after leaving the service. Sam and Virginia farmed east of Farber for many years before retiring in 1988 and moving to Vandalia. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Vandalia where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. Sam had also served on the MFA Oil board and enjoyed gardening and fixing things.

Born: March 13, 1921 in rural Ralls County, Missouri the son of Glenn Birdell and Fannie Mae (Jones) McCollum.

Married: Virginia Margaret Harris on September 26, 1948 in St. Louis; she preceded him in death on March 17, 2008.

Survivors include: two daughters: Arlene F. and husband, Jack McKain of What Cheer, Iowa and Sandi G. and husband, Alan Wood of Henderson, Kentucky; one brother: Charles and wife, Bevy McCollum of Vandalia, Missouri; one sister-in-law: Becky McCollum of Centralia, Missouri; eight grandchildren: Chad and wife, April McKain of What Cheer, Iowa; Adam and wife, Evie McKain of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Jeff and wife, Jenny J. Wood of Ankeny, Iowa; Andy Wood, Michael Wood and Jenny S. Wood all of Henderson, Kentucky; Carla Wistrom of Ankeny, Iowa and Kristina Mayfield of Carrollton, Kentucky; six great-grandchildren: Sadie McKain, Addison McKain, Saige McKain, Caleb Wood, Isaac Wood and Isabel Wood; also survived by nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: wife, Virginia; one brother: Robert McCollum; two sisters: Mae Dell McCollum and Marguerite Langford.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the First Baptist Church, 213 N. Lindell, Vandalia, Missouri 63382.
