Charlotte M. Kastien a lifelong Vandalia area resident had been a seamstress at the Bobbie Brooks Garment Factory in Vandalia for many years before her retirement. She was a Christian by faith. Her hobbies included flowers, gardening, knitting and fishing.

Born: November 4, 1918, in Troy, Ill., to Joseph B. and Cora Dell (Callen) Spencer.

Married: Orlan R. Kastien on Dec. 29, 1967. He preceded her in death on March 15, 1997.

Survivors include one sister, Jean Jansma of Buda, Texas; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceded in death by: one sister, Della L. Hurshman, and three brothers, Glenn, Harold "Curly" and Kenneth Spencer.
